There doesn't seem to be much order to my thoughts, and if you read this blog that's something you're well apprised of already. So let's just continue with the numerical approach, for now. It provides a little structure, although it's definitely false and contrived. One thing I'll say for myself--I may deviate from an original point or anecdote (in cases where there was one), but I allllllllllways bring those threads back together. I'm like the three Fates all rolled into one. Not my best analogy.
I am, however, deviating from precedent here and despite understanding and appreciating that the majority of you voted in favor of my long posts (and even my short ones promise to be long) that cover a variety of topics, will make this one exclusively about my time with Eunice & Hugo. I decided that an hour into writing it, when I realized that #17 of what now looks to be a potential list of 127 (one per Facebook fan) had gone grossly beyond any parameters, even mine, and organically become its own post. Enjoy. It's not too long. twss...
17. Just returned from a week in Vermont. It was phenomenal. I feel like considering that most of you are Facebook friends and/or family and friends with whom I speak fairly regularly, you were already over-saturated with information about the sickness that preceded my trip, but kids, it was bad. I emerged from the stupor of The August(ine) Plague, the year of our Lord 2010, with about 12 hours to spare before departure. This after being granted a three day reprieve by a couple close friends of Joel & Christine's, who were willing to watch their dog & tend to their birds/garden, respectively, until I arrived. Thank you to the Woods and Elliots!
I was relieved that the dogs got along so well. Eunice was properly proprietary about her homestead, and Hugo was proprietary about my affection/lap/attention, although they each had full, unfettered access to both. It balanced out beautifully, I think. They each got sufficient running around time, and were a great match physically for play-fighting & chasing one another. Hugo was really into exploring. Euny was really into watching Hugo explore, and barking incessantly. I think she's just good at the latter in general. He tolerated it well, and she, in turn, tolerated having another dog just show up out of the blue and kick it in her house for a week. Job's total indifference to both dogs is actually complementary to my dog-centricity. Every time we'd pull up from having been out somewhere and hear them barking he'd sigh and wryly say,
"Oh listen, there are your best friends."
"Oh listen, there are your best friends."
I'll only subject you to one more of Ebony & Ivory.
"Salt & Peppa's Heeeeeeeeeyah, Sa-Sa-Sa-Salt & Peppa's Heeeeeyah!"
Seems as good a time as any for an early 90's hip hop reference.
This one looks kind of dated, or emo--or maybe just straight up COOL.
I can't decide.
I do know Euny was super cute with her bandanna on.
When I said one more, I meant brace yourselves.
I love their stances in this next one.
I had video of the two of them play-fighting, but had to delete it to make room on my ghetto phone for actual photos of more substantive stuff. You know, like human beings and places. Things of that nature.
Christine told me a few days ago that Eunice has been wandering around looking for Hugo around every corner.
I've tested Hugo to see if he remembers by saying "Euny? Do you remember Euny? Is she your friend?" and because 7.5 years with this man have instilled in me a deep comprehension of what the different variants of the standard head cock mean, I do believe he's indicated that yes, he does remember.
Until they meet again.....
....May the memories suffice.
p.s. Eunice? I miss you, dawg. That was a pun of sorts that you'll likely not get, because you are indeed a dog. Hugo's asleep, so I'm gonna quickly upload this next one. He wasn't pleased when we took it, as you well recall. But I like you, sister. I like your stuff and I like your style. I was charged with your care & I think we did just fine. Catch you on the flip side.

Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIt was MY PLEASURE, Christine (and the rest of you guys). It really really was. Thank you! Anytime--I mean it. I'd have a little more 'homestead' experience under my belt next time too, concerning the gardens, etc. I had a great time!!
ReplyDeleteThey do look cute together in the pictures. Is this a fish story in canine clothing? hehe BTW - these old eyes cannot read anything in the right hand column against the dark green background. Aunt Roxanna
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad to hear they got along so well! Dog wars aren't cool. Chewie has actually gotten along very well with my parents' two dogs in the six months since we've been here. Isn't it amazing how animals to whom we're supposed to be superior are actually much more evolved than we are in so many ways (unconditional love, no discrimination)?
